Denver tops Dallas in survey of places people want to live
매년 실시되는 미국인이 살고싶은 도시 여론 조사에서 콜로라도 덴버가 1위를 차지하고,
댈러스는 중간 밖에 못 갔다는 기사.
같은 내용도 아주 유머러스하게 편한 어조로 쓰고있다.
순위 기사란게, 쓰기에 따라서 지역 이기주의나 지역 감정으로 나타나기도 쉬운데 말이지.
편지글 형식으로 다른 도시들에 비해 나쁘지 않은 도시 환경을 자랑도 하고
은근히 겨울 폭풍에 준비도 제대로 하지 않은 댈러스 시 당국을 비꼬기도 하고,
참 재밌지 않나?
정규 일간지 기사라고 꼭 정치한 문장으로 전달할 필요는 없을 것 같다.

우릴 좀 더 좋아해 주지 않을래?
Pew Research Center에서 이번 주에 내놓은 전국 여론 조사에서 24퍼센트의 응답자가 댈러스에 살고 싶다고 했지. 그 수치는 우리를 시카고, 뉴욕, 필라델피아와 동급으로 중간에 세워 놨더군.
우린 평균이 되고 싶진 않아. 우린 1위가 되고 싶지.
댁들은 다른 Big D — Denver에 더 살고 싶어 하더군. 43 퍼센트의 응답자들이 1마일 높이에 있는 도시에 살고 싶어 하더군.
헐, la-di-da.
댁들 중 40 퍼센트가 San Diego에 살고 싶어하더군. 왜? 끊기지 않는 햇살과 모래 해변, 그리고 바다 풍경 때문에?
어쨌거나.
우린 최소한 다른 big D에 속하는 Detroit 보다는 잘했지. 8 퍼센트만이 거기 살고 싶어하거든.
좋아, 그래 우린 산이나 바다가 없어.하지만 우린 hill country가 있어.
아차, 그건 Austin에 있구나.
우리의 싼 집 값은 어떻고? 여기를 고향이라 부르는 Fortune 500 기업 들은 어떻고? 우리의 유명한 구호인 '크게 살자. 크게 생각하자'는 어떻고?
우리의 일류 레스토랑에서 먹어본 적이 있어? 우리 쇼핑몰에서 쇼핑한 적은 있어? 최근에 Dallas Cowboys의 미식 축구 게임을 본 적은 있어? 미안, 그건 아니네.
어쨋든, 더위를 말한다면, 겨울에 여기 와 본 적이 있어? 일 년 중 이맘때는, Dallas가 Denver보다는 훨 낫지.
연중 행사인 ice storm 때만은 오지마. 이번 주에도 한 건 했거든. 우리의 도로들은 소금도 거의 덮이지 않아서 우린 스케이드 장에서 운전하고 다녀야 했거든. 하지만 얼음은 아주 빨리 녹고 우린 우리가 제일 잘하는 일에 바로 복귀하지. 바로 외식하고, 쇼핑하고, 애들 응원하고.. 뭐 그런거.
뭐 최소한 하나는 기분 좋군: 그 순위에서 우리가 Houston보단 나았다는거.

Dear America,
Why don’t you like us more?
A national survey released this week by the Pew Research Center shows that 24 percent of respondents want to live in Dallas. While that’s respectable, and puts us in line with Chicago, New York and Philadelphia, we’re smack dab in the middle.
We don’t like being average. We want to be No. 1.
You’d rather live in another Big D — Denver. Forty-three percent of the survey respondents want to live in the Mile High City.
Well, la-di-da.
And 40 percent of you would rather live in San Diego. Why? Because they have nonstop sunshine and sandy beaches and ocean views?
Whatever.
At least we did better than Detroit. Eight percent want to live in that other Big D.
OK, so we don’t have mountains or oceans. But we do have the Hill Country.
Oh, wait, that’s in Austin.
What about our cheap housing? What about all the Fortune 500 companies that call us home? What about our fabulous slogan: Live Large. Think Big?
Have you dined in our top-notch restaurants? Have you shopped at our malls? Have you seen a Dallas Cowboys game lately? Sorry, scratch that one.
Anyway, speaking of hot, have you visited us in the winter? This time of year, it’s much nicer in Dallas than Denver.
Just don’t visit us during our annual ice storm. We celebrated ours this week. Our roads hardly get salted, so we drive around on a skating rink. But the ice melts quickly and we get back to doing what we do best: Eating out, shopping and cheering on our ’Boys.
Well, at least one thing makes us feel better: We scored better on that Pew list than Houston.
